Probably my favorite place in the world so far. It's beautiful, peaceful, calm, and serene. It changes with the seasons. Views are spectacular. The visitor's center is free and has some pretty neat displays. I'd you haven't visited the refuge, I highly recommend it.
Always an enjoyable experience. Staff is generally friendly. Great place for a pit stop or cool down when entering and leaving the refuge. Facilities are kept clean and provide a good place to change if need be. Be careful with young kids in the parking lot as there can be a lot of traffic at times. Occasionally you'll get to see a Longhorn or Buffalo up close.
Great challenging hike to the summit. All types of excellent day hikes from beginner trails to the more difficult boulder-hopping climb we did. Highly recommend.
I made a reservation here to go back country camping with my fiance the first weekend in August. They had recently had a flood and a lot of the trail markers had washed away, so the trails were extra wilderness-y but all in all it was very picturesque. We hiked around for a while and everyone we passed were very friendly and helpful- so we didn't get lost very often.
The trails were not very well maintained, and we were not warned in advance that it would be marked instead with a small pile of rocks at random intervals. I believe this would need rectified before I could willingly rate higher, or at least I should have been warned at the visitors center where we received our permit in advance.
I would still recommend a visit, but make sure you come prepared willing to explore, off road, get sorta lost, and wear boots that let you climb a little. The rocks were nothing to scoff at!
We literally enjoyed our getaway in Wichita Mountain at this time of the year. The weather was pretty cool & the trees were totally turned into fall season. We get to see alot of wild animals. Hope next time could do camping & fishing. And, do not miss to stop by & eat at the Meers. You will definitely love their specialty food!!!
